Factors to Consider When Choosing
Between Silicone vs. Saline Implants

Silicone and saline breast implantsDr. Bruce Hermann understands that each body is different and that the desired outcomes of a breast augmentation or breast reconstruction will vary from patient to patient. One of the most important decisions to make when undergoing breast surgery is which type of implant to receive. During your consultation at his Denton, TX, office, Dr. Hermann can help you decide between silicone vs. saline implants and explain the features of each. Having completed a fellowship under world-renowned cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgeon Dennis C. Hammond, Dr. Herman possesses the eye for excellence and extensive training to provide you with great information to help you make confident decisions about your cosmetic surgery.

Your Initial Consultation

During your breast surgery consultation, Dr. Hermann will be happy to discuss your breast implant options with you and help you decide whether silicone or saline implants will best help you achieve your desired outcomes. He will discuss the advantages of disadvantages of each implant, and allow you to hold the implant in your hands to help you feel the difference. Dr. Hermann will use the BodyLogic™ system to precisely measure your current breasts and help you accurately select the size and shape of the ideal implant for your body. This system also provides computer-generated previews of your potential outcomes, helping you feel confident about your decision to undergo breast augmentation. You can also learn more by reviewing our breast augmentation FAQ prior to your consultation.

Advantages of Silicone

If your primary concern is the way that your implants feel, silicone implants may be a better choice for your augmentation. Most patients who receive silicone implants do not notice a change in the way their breast feels after surgery, as silicone has a more natural consistency than saline. Your implants are also less susceptible to wrinkling with silicone implants. Several medical studies have concluded that silicone implants are safe for use in breast augmentation and present no additional health risks when compared to women without implants.

Dr. Hermann will use the BodyLogic™ system to precisely measure your current breasts and help you accurately select the size and shape of the ideal implant type for your body.

Types of Silicone Implants

Patients who choose silicone implants have several additional decisions to make. Some of the characteristics to consider when choosing your implants include:

  • Profile: Do you want more or less projecting implants?
  • Firmness: Do you want a soft or firm feel?
  • Roundness: Do you want a rounder or smaller circumference?

Our office also offers shaped implants for patients who need to reconstruct their breasts entirely rather than just add size or improve shape. These implants have their own shape and are typically used for breast reconstruction patients.

Implant Safety Improvements

New developments in the safety of silicone breast implants have eliminated the problems of earlier implants. For example, there are now "gummy bear" implants filled with a safer silicone gel. During your consultation, Dr. Hermann will help you choose the right implant.

Advantages of Saline

Saline implants are inserted into the breast empty and filled with saline, a saltwater mixture, after placement. If you have an aversion to silicone, saline implants may be a good option for you. These implants are also less expensive than silicone implants but allow patients to achieve the same increase in cup size. Although you can achieve a soft result with saline implants, you will be more likely to feel the implant in your breast. In the unlikely event that a saline implant ruptures, the saline will be absorbed and excreted from your body naturally.

What Both Can Offer

Thanks to the careful techniques that Dr. Hermann employs, patients who receive either silicone or saline implants can enjoy minimal scarring and discretion. Both implants offer patients enhanced shape and size. Dr. Hermann also conducts highly personalized consultations to help you decide which implants will best suit your need and complement your figure.
