Breast Augmentation FAQ

If you are considering breast augmentation, it is important to be well-informed about all aspects of treatment. At North Texas Breast & Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bruce Hermann answers breast augmentation FAQ, allowing you to have a better understanding of the procedure and recovery. Our Denton, TX, practice has been proudly serving our community for nearly a decade. We offer both CareCredit® and United Medical Credit financing options to help our patients afford the treatment they desire.

Are breast augmentation scars noticeable?

Dr. Hermann places incisions strategically to minimize scarring. In most cases, the scars will be short and hidden in the creases beneath your breasts. Patients who choose to also have a breast lift will require incisions from the crease to the nipple.

How long will my breast implants last?

Breast implants can potentially last a lifetime. However, it is not possible to guarantee these results, as they are not considered lifetime devices by the manufacturers. Over time, the risk of leakage increases. Should this occur, your surgeon can help you determine the best course of action.

How do I know whether I need a breast augmentation or breast lift?

If you are concerned about the size or shape of your breasts, a breast augmentation is an excellent choice. However, if your primary concern is sagging, you may be a candidate for a breast lift.

Should my implants be placed over or under the muscle?

This is a personal choice that should be based on your preferences and body type. Subglandular - or over the muscle - placement produces a more dramatic and rounder effect, and is a less invasive procedure. There is a lower risk of capsular contracture with subpectoral - or under the muscle - placement. Subpectoral implants produce a more natural-looking result with less chance of rippling. Dr. Hermann can discuss the pros and cons of each treatment option with you in greater detail.

Is breast augmentation a painful procedure?

Patients undergo breast augmentation under general anesthesia for their comfort. During the procedure, individuals are not aware of their surroundings, and are completely relaxed and comfortable. Due to the surgical nature of the procedure, it is common to feel some degree of discomfort and tenderness after treatment. However, following the post-operative guidelines provided by our team can help you enjoy a successful, comfortable recovery.

Will I be able to breastfeed with implants?

Though there are no guarantees, most women are able to breastfeed following breast augmentation. Using advanced techniques and methods, Dr. Hermann’s goal is to preserve the nipples and the milk ducts so that breastfeeding remains a possibility.

Does breast augmentation affect breast exams?

Yes. Breast implants can affect mammography results, particularly those that are placed above the muscle. For this reason, it is very important to inform your doctors and technicians about your breast implants. Different techniques can be used to ensure accurate results.
