What makes liposuction such a popular cosmetic procedure for our patients in Lewisville, Flower Mound, and Denton, TX?
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic fat removal surgery. During the procedure, a thin metal tube called a cannula is inserted into the body through small, strategically placed incisions. A plastic surgeon can target and extract select fat cells, suctioning them out of the patient's body. Thanks to liposuction, plastic surgeons can remove unwanted fatty tissue and give patients a slimmer frame.
A Safe & Proven Method of Targeting & Removing Fat Cells
Effective Technique
When your body has fat deposits that are very difficult to reduce, liposuction surgery can offer a reliable means of achieving slimmer body contours and a more aesthetically pleasing shape through fat removal.Versatile Treatment
Liposuction can be performed on almost any area of the body, but the abdomen (tummy), flanks (love handles), and thighs are by far the most popular areas that people choose to reduce, making it a less invasive alternative to abdominoplasty or a thigh lift.Relatively Simple Surgery
The liposuction procedure is done on an outpatient basis, and it involves using hollow metal rods called cannulas to suction excess fat out of the desired areas. The Gold Standard
Which parts of the body can be addressed with liposuction surgery?
Virtually Any Area Can Be Treated with Liposuction
Liposuction surgery can effectively reduce fat deposits in the:
- Abdomen
- Flanks (love handles)
- Outer thighs (saddlebags)
- Inner thighs
- Buttocks
- Face
- Neck
- Upper arms
- Axilla (armpits)
- Knees
- Calves
It is important to note that although the liposuction procedure can reduce fat cells, the surgery cannot remove excess skin. If excess skin is one of your concerns, a tummy tuck or other body contouring option may be a better choice.

Understanding Potential Risks
Liposuction surgery is a very safe procedure.
Common Surgical Risks
The general risks of any surgery such as bleeding, infection, or abnormal scarring, are possible, but these only occur in a very small percentage of cases. Abnormal contouring of the skin is a risk specific to liposuction surgery that may occur in a very small percentage of liposuction procedures.
Putting Patients at Ease
For your added comfort and peace of mind during the procedure, Dr. Hermann will also place you under general anesthesia. This deep form of sedation combined with local anesthesia to manage pain allows you to remain completely unconscious during your surgery.

How do we ensure safe, effective treatment?
Our Minimally Invasive Techniques Produce Safe Results & Discreet Scarring
Negative outcomes from liposuction are usually the result of trying to do too much at one time.
Dr. Hermann is a highly trained and very conservative surgeon who errs on the side of caution and holds your safety in high regard. You can rest assured that he would not perform or recommend any surgery that would put you at significant risk. We also offer even less invasive forms of the procedure, such as BodyTite, a type of radiofrequency-assisted liposuction.
Can Liposuction Help with Weight Management?
/
While patients will lose a few pounds of excess fat, we want to reiterate that liposuction should not be used for weight management or as a replacement for weight loss.

What to Expect
After Surgery
Liposuction is not an overly painful procedure, but you will have some discomfort in the days immediately following your surgery. However, your pain should quickly improve.
Bruising and swelling are common after liposuction. In fact, swelling is fairly constant for about two weeks, but then begins to resolve. The bruising should resolve in two to three weeks. By six weeks after your surgery, the swelling should have gone down to a level where you can really start to see the results of the fat removal. It can take two to three months for all swelling to resolve.
At North Texas Breast & Plastic Surgery Center in Denton, Dr. Hermann encourages you to return to your daily activities very quickly after surgery, with the exception of exercise or working out, which he asks that you refrain from for a period of four weeks to prevent the risk of post-operative bleeding.

Liposuction FAQs
How does liposuction work?
Your body has two layers of fat underneath your skin. There is a superficial layer which has a fairly even thickness over the body, and a deep layer where excess fat can be deposited and result in bulges. These deep layer bulges are what cause the unwanted changes in your body contour. Liposuction is used to reduce the amount of fat in the deep layer to restore your body contour to a more cosmetically pleasing shape.
What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is a surgical technique that involves the injection of a solution into the treatment area. This solution contains local anesthetic and epinephrine. The solution causes the fat cells to swell and become firm, making them easier to remove. The solution also minimizes discomfort, lessens blood loss during the procedure, and reduces post-operative bruising and swelling.
Is liposuction surgery a good weight loss option?
No. The procedure is intended to target pockets of excess fat with a cannula, not to reduce your body mass per se. If you want to lose weight, we can discuss other methods that are ideal for those goals.
What are the effects of liposuction on the skin?
Liposuction in and of itself should not directly affect your skin, however, removing a significant amount of fat underneath the skin can sometimes cause the skin to be looser. The amount of looseness or laxity of the skin is affected by two factors: the amount of fat removed and the elastic properties of your skin. The elasticity of your skin decreases with age, becoming significantly decreased by ages 45-50. In your consultation at our Denton, TX, practice, Dr. Hermann will discuss how liposuction will affect your overlying skin and fat loss.
How does liposuction surgery compare to other fat loss techniques I have heard about?
It seems that new ways to reduce fat in the body such as injections, freezing the fat, etc., are coming onto the scene all the time, and Dr. Hermann is asked about these procedures quite frequently. The one thing to remember is that there is a reason that plastic surgeons as a whole do not embrace these new techniques. Although some may actually have some effectiveness in reducing unwanted fat, the problem with these techniques is their lack of reliability in giving consistent results, and many of them can leave a patient with abnormal contouring of their body and/or skin.
Plastic surgeons, who are accepted as the experts on improving the appearance of the body, know that liposuction remains the gold standard for safe and consistent improvement of excess fat, and therefore continue to use it over the newer techniques with less consistent results.
