As we age, weakening muscles, lost skin elasticity, and excess fat can cause eyelids to droop, making you appear older and tired, and even obstructing your vision. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, addresses sagging lower and upper eyelids by removing or redistributing extra skin, fat, and muscle.
By performing this popular plastic surgery procedure at our Denton, TX, practice, Dr. Hermann can help you look alert and rested, or restore peripheral vision blocked by excess skin. Many of our Denton area patients combine blepharoplasty with a brow lift and dermal fillers to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead and eye areas.

Is Blepharoplasty a Popular Procedure?

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Before this outpatient procedure, you will be administered anesthesia to ensure your comfort during surgery. The length of the procedure will depend on whether you are having upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both. Surgery will take longer if additional procedures such as a brow lift are performed. In most cases, the procedure can be completed in two to three hours.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Hermann will make discreet incisions in the lash line and remove excess skin, fat tissue, and muscle tissue to minimize puffiness. He can also tighten loose muscles, redistribute fat, or add dermal fillers to create a smoother surface.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Hermann will make incisions in your upper eyelid's natural creases, resulting in discreet, concealed scars. He will then lift the sagging eyelid and trim excess skin and fat for a more alert and refreshed appearance.

Post-Surgery

Dr. Hermann will close the incisions with barbed sutures to further tighten the skin, and place bandages over the surgical areas. After surgery, you will need to have someone available to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

After surgery, you may experience watery eyes, light sensitivity, and double vision. You can also expect minor swelling, redness, and bruising over the next couple of weeks.

Cold compresses can help swelling and bruising fade quickly. Avoid rubbing your eyes, and sleep with your head raised for the first few nights. Patients who wear contact lenses should wait about two weeks before putting them in.

In the days following surgery, you will need to avoid strenuous activity. Dr. Hermann will monitor your recovery to let you know when it is safe to resume work, exercise, and other activities.

Dr. Hermann will send you home with your own detailed postoperative instructions to ensure that you achieve a successful recovery and long-lasting results. These instructions will include when to take prescription medicines and apply topical antibiotics to avoid infection. It is important to follow these instructions carefully.
